FinishedPit fired ceramics are made by wrapping/ covering a bisque fired piece in different materials. These materials leave different colors and patterns when burned off depending on what materials you use. Most people cover their piece with carbon-dense things such as leaves and dog food; these items usually leave a gray/ black color when burned. Other people also use salt which leaves a red color. Saggars are protective fireclay boxes that enclose ceramics while they are being fired. I found that the inside of the pot was successful because the colors turned out well. I also found that the shape of the piece was successful since it was very close to what I was going for. If I were to make it again, I would wrap it in different things, including salt, to give it more color. What I burnedI burned my dog's fur, some leaves, dog food, twigs, salt, and acid.

The Process I started the mug by making a clay slab that was 1/4 in thick. I then folded the sides in to make the three feet. Once that had dried a little bit I began to mold the clay to look like a bee hive rather than a cylinder. To create the texture of the honey comb I printed off a picture of it. I placed it on my piece and traced it with a pencil. I then took a ribbon tool and scrapped out the inside to give it more texture and to look more realistic. After that, I added clay to the top to look like dripping honey. I made three bees as well to attach later. I then bisque fired the piece, glazed it, and glaze fired it. In that process all three of the bees broke due to how thin they were. Handle I did not include a handle because my piece is very big and I was planning on using it as a cookie jar not a mug. Reflection I found that the texture of the honey comb turned out well along with the honey dripping down. If we were to do this again, I would change the colors that I chose for the glazes. I think they are ugly and make my piece look like a giraffe. Clay slab: A thin, smooth, and flat piece of clay.
